SUMMARY:Seattle SHRM May Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Benefits strategies are evolving quickly—and HR leaders are under increasing pressure to ensure their plans remain competitive\, cost-effective\, and aligned with what peer organizations are doing. \nThis session takes a practical\, market-driven approach to both health insurance and 401(k) plan design\, highlighting current industry trends and how employers are adapting their strategies in real time. Attendees will gain insight into how similar organizations are structuring their benefits\, where they are investing\, and which plan features they are prioritizing to attract and retain talent. \nUsing ERISA as a unifying framework\, this session will also explore the key “levers” HR leaders can adjust across both health and retirement plans—from contributions and plan design features to emerging fringe benefits—to drive stronger outcomes. \nIn addition\, we will cover key legislative updates impacting plan sponsors\, including SECURE 2.0 and the evolving requirements under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026\, which expands upon Health & Welfare plan regulations introduced in the CAA of 2021. Attendees will gain clarity on how these changes affect compliance\, fiduciary responsibility\, and overall plan strategy. \nParticipants will leave with a clearer understanding of how their current offerings compare to peers\, along with actionable ideas to refine and elevate their overall benefits strategy. \nLearning Objectives: \nBy attending this session\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify current trends in health insurance and 401(k) plan design across industries\n Evaluate how peer organizations are structuring benefits to remain competitive\n Understand key fiduciary considerations under ERISA as they apply to both health and retirement plans\n Apply strategic “levers” within plan design (e.g.\, contributions\, plan features\, ancillary benefits) to improve outcomes\n Interpret key provisions of SECURE 2.0 and their impact on plan sponsors and participants\n Understand expanded compliance and transparency requirements under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026 for Health & Welfare plans\n Develop a more integrated and aligned approach to total benefits strategy

SUMMARY:Seattle SHRM April Chapter Meeting - Lead Like You Mean It: The New Rules of Leadership
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to throw the old leadership playbook in the garbage. The world has changed\, the workplace continues to shift\, AI showed up uninvited\, and somehow we’re still leading like it’s 2015. \nThis session is a direct conversation about what leadership actually requires right now — and why leadership confidence is more important than ever. \nWe’re not talking about BS bravado\, we’re talking about building real confidence capacity that drives decision-making\, instills psychological safety (especially important in a rapidly changing environment)\, and deepens the trust that every organization needs to thrive in any circumstance \nWe’ll explore what it looks like when leaders operate from confidence versus when they’re running on uncertainty — because the difference shows up everywhere: how decisions get made\, how change initiatives live or die\, how teams follow (or don’t). \nWe’ll call out the confidence blockers nobody talks about in leadership development budgets. And we’ll connect confidence to commitment\, because one without the other is just a good intention. \nWhether you’re doing this work on yourself or trying to figure out how to help the people leaders you support actually lead — you’ll leave with something real to work with. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nName what leadership actually requires today — beyond the buzzwords — and recognize why the old approaches are losing traction in a world that won’t stop shifting.\nSpot the difference between leading from confidence and leading from uncertainty — and understand how that difference plays out in real decisions\, real change initiatives\, and real team dynamics.\nIdentify you own confidence blockers (and help the leaders you support do the same) — the specific patterns\, habits\, and narratives that quietly keep capable leaders stuck in second-guessing mode.\nBuild a personal confidence development approach — for yourself and as something practical they can bring to the people leaders they support.\nUnderstand why confidence and commitment go together — and what it takes to lead consistently when the environment is anything but.

SUMMARY:March Chapter Meeting: Batten Down the Hatches! 2026 Employment Law Action Items
DESCRIPTION:Don’t fall overboard!  An active legislature\, plaintiff-friendly judges\, and a loose cannon plaintiff’s bar have increased the risk of being swamped by employment law mistakes.  Errors with job postings\, outside employment policies\, and meal and rest periods now risk staggering class action damages. \nLearn where the dangerous waters lie. We’ll also chart some unmarked reefs to comply with new 2026 laws on background checks\, paid family medical leave\, personnel files\, reductions in force\, sick leave\, and more.  Employment law attorney Catharine Morisset will help us weather the storm: attendees will learn key compliance requirements and develop a list of immediate action items to take back to their crew. \nLearning Goals:\n\nReview job postings\, outside employment policies\, and meal and rest period compliance requirements for class action mitigation\, including both the statutory requirements\, but also new cases interpreting them\nDevelop of list of policies that must be updated to avoid automatic liability – including PFML\, personnel files\, sick leave\, and background checks\nDetermine areas where immediate management training and procedural updates are needed for internal compliance with the new laws\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Topic: Empathy is Not Dead: It’s Just Tired of Buzzwords \nLet’s face it\, “empathy” gets thrown around a lot. It’s often performative or misunderstood. \nIn this talk\, I’m cutting through the noise. I’ll show how real empathy\, the kind rooted in neuroscience and human connection\, is one of the most powerful tools we have. Empathy is more than a buzzword; it’s a business driver. When we use it with intention\, we create relationship shortcuts\, fuel performance and make better decisions. Empathy works. Not just for people\, but for performance. Empathy means business. \nLearning Objectives:\nBy attending this session\, participants will: \n\nDerive Value & Bust Myths including ROI & Research Trends\nInvestigate Empathy featuring Breakout Experimentation Leveraging Neuroscience\nReview your Amplification of Empathy Emerging through Shareback & Debrief\n\nAttendee Credits\nAttendees who participate for the full duration of the educational session will be eligible to earn 1 SHRM and 1 HRCI recertification credit. \nSpeaker\n\nPatricia Bravo doesn’t follow convention. She selected career opportunities which gave her an unvarnished\, hierarchy-free\, direct line of sight into the everyday impact leaders have on teams.\nAfter earning an MBA and working her way up at companies acquired by Oracle and IBM\, she landed at Starbucks\, making an unusual choice. She turned down a promotion to serve people she cares for most\, team members.\nWhile navigating corporate life\, she supported hundreds of students through a teaching side hustle. That defiance won her an Instructor of the Year award\, landed her an invitation to publish research and opened doors to teaching undergraduates at University of Washington\, Bothell and professionals at UCLA Extension.\nShe bucked convention again\, starting her company Bravo For You\, where she’s become known for her human-centered empathetic leadership programs with clients like Sony Pictures\, T-Mobile\, Amazon and more.
